Project details
Description of the project:
The old landfill "Balger Straße" was created as a former clay pit of a brickyard and subsequently used by the city of Baden-Baden as a landfill for household waste. Waste: Household waste, commercial waste, building rubble, road debris, excavated earth, sewage sludge
Characteristic pollutants in the groundwater downstream: CHCs, PAHs, benzene, cyanide, ammonium, as well as gas emissions in the immediate vicinity (road substructure, shafts, sewers). After a detailed investigation, it was decided to remediate the contaminated site by means of a cut-off wall.
Start / Completion:
2003/2012 (main measure, cut-off wall construction 2008, monitoring phase still ongoing until 2012)
Services performed by ICP:
ICP was first commissioned to carry out the I/E investigation (remediation investigation E3-4) in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg Contaminated Sites Manual. For this purpose, after the planning of the further investigation measures by ICP, tender documents for the construction of additional groundwater observation wells as well as other measures (pumping and backfilling tests, taking soil samples (for soil mechanical / physical investigations) as well as groundwater samples (for chemical analyses) were prepared. The boreholes were monitored and the investigation results were evaluated together with the findings available so far.
After the possibility of a cut-off wall around the old deposit was shortlisted as a recommended measure, ICP carried out groundwater modelling and then simulated the effects of a cut-off wall. After the sealing of the old deposit by means of a cut-off wall had been determined as a safety measure, the hydraulic measures required for this were described by ICP. After approval of the cut-off wall enclosure with dewatering and leachate treatment (pump and treat), ICP was commissioned with the planning and local construction supervision of the measure.
