Learning from contaminated sites and cases of damage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept of the Karlsruhe Contaminated Sites Seminar is to address current topics and to provide an overview of the current state of contaminated site management, as well as to highlight new developments, tendencies and trends. As the subtitle of the seminar suggests, we try to build a bridge from experience with contaminated sites and damage cases to preventive soil and groundwater protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mantelverordnung and thus also the amendment to the BBodSchV has been in force since 1 August 2023. In our opinion, the most significant innovations in the BBodSchV are, for the first time, regulations on backfilling, which in \u00a7\u00a7 6 and 8 specify requirements for the placement or introduction of materials below or outside a rootable soil layer. As with the previous BBodSchV from 1999, based on the former \u00a7 12 of the BBodSchV, the LABO has again issued an enforcement aid for \u00a7\u00a7 6 - 8 for the placement and introduction of materials on or in the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is followed by articles on the handling of GFS values for groundwater and the test values for the soil-groundwater impact pathway, on the expected innovations of an amendment to the BBodSchG and the introduction of an EU Soil Monitoring Directive, and on the updating and consolidation of the LABO working aids on leachate prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The omnipresent topic of PFAS is also dealt with in four articles: On the origin and fate in the environment, including in actually uncontaminated soils from long-term soil monitoring areas in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, during remediation at a NATO airfield and on the possibilities and limits of PFAS soil washing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics range from preventive soil protection through soil protection concepts and pedological construction monitoring, to the effect of microplastics in soils, the influence of conversion areas near city centres on the urban climate, the influence of sampling on the uncertainty of results and sustainability aspects in soil and groundwater remediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is followed by reports on Natural Attenuation (NA) and the stimulation of biodegradation in Enhanced NA, on the first complete remediation of an HCH production site in the border triangle of France, Switzerland and Germany, the remediation of complex groundwater damage in the Schwarze Pumpe industrial park under mining law, and on the remediation of an explosives plant using constructed wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics of nature and species protection in remediation measures, the handling of asbestos in the material cycle, soil moisture measurements as part of a soil monitoring programme and the future of landfill and contaminated site remediation using intelligent robotics are not classic contaminated site topics, but are important in this context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
